Force transducers and load cells

Force transducer or load cell calibration

Force transducers and load cells are found in presses, test rigs, weighing and dosing systems and machines that monitor forces. We calibrate them in tension up to 500 kN and in compression up to 4,000 kN, on their own or together with the indicator, on our tensile and compression test benches at our Elspeet facility.

Which transducers do we calibrate?

  • S-type transducers for tension and compression, widely used in suspended weighing systems and test rigs;
  • Compression transducers such as column, ring and pancake transducers, from presses and foundation measurements, among others;
  • Tension transducers with threaded ends or eyes, for example in tensile test rigs and cable measurements;
  • Load cells from weighing and dosing systems, such as bending beam and shear beam cells, provided they can be mounted in a force calibration bench;
  • Ring transducers and ring dynamometers with mechanical or electronic readout.

We calibrate all brands. If you are unsure whether your transducer will fit in our benches, send us the dimensions or the type number; we will then check in advance which adapters are needed.

Transducer only or the complete measuring chain?

A force transducer produces a small electrical signal, usually in mV/V. Only the amplifier or indicator turns this into a force. You can choose:

  • Complete measuring chain. Transducer, cable and readout are calibrated together. The certificate then applies to exactly the combination you use, in the unit shown on your display. This is what we recommend in most cases.
  • Transducer only. We measure the output signal with our own measuring amplifier and report the sensitivity and deviation in mV/V. Useful if the transducer is used in different systems or if you have the readout checked separately.

If you replace a cable or amplifier after the calibration, or change the settings, the result for the complete measuring chain no longer automatically applies.

What do we pay attention to during the measurement?

The outcome of a force calibration depends strongly on the way the transducer is mounted. A transducer that is loaded at an angle is subjected to lateral forces or bending moments that affect the result. We therefore use suitable loading pads, adapters and articulated couplings, so that the force is introduced purely along the measuring axis.

Before the measurement series we preload the transducer a few times up to the maximum force. This stabilises the transducer and removes any settling in the mounting. The measuring steps then follow, increasing and then decreasing, so that the hysteresis also becomes visible. For transducers used in both directions, we measure tension and compression separately.

What do I read on the certificate?

A certificate for a force transducer contains more than a list of numbers. The key terms:

  • Reading and deviation. For each load step you see what your measuring chain indicates, what force the reference measures and the difference between the two, in the unit of your display or in mV/V.
  • Sensitivity. For a transducer on its own, this is the output signal at nominal load, for example 2.0003 mV/V. You enter this value in the amplifier so that the readout is correct.
  • Zero point. The reading without load, before and after the measurement series. A zero point that does not return after loading may indicate a damaged transducer or poor mounting.
  • Hysteresis. The difference between the reading at increasing and at decreasing force at the same measuring point. Important if you measure both while a force is building up and while it is being released.
  • Measurement uncertainty. The margin within which the true value lies with a high degree of probability, determined according to EURAMET cg-4. Take it into account when assessing whether your process stays within tolerance.

What should you send along?

  • the transducer and, for a calibration of the measuring chain, also the cable and the indicator or amplifier, with power supply or charger;
  • the type number and, if you have it, the data sheet with nominal load, sensitivity and thread or mounting dimensions;
  • your own loading pads, tension rods or adapters if the transducer is used with them in practice;
  • the previous certificate, so that we can compare the new results and you can see whether the transducer is drifting.

State in your request which measuring points are important to you. If your press always operates around 60 kN, for example, we will include that point in the measurement series.

Frequently asked questions

Can you calibrate a load cell from a scale?

Yes, if the load cell can be supplied separately and fits in a force calibration bench. If you want the complete weighing system checked, a calibration of the scale with weights is usually the better choice.

Can a force transducer be adjusted?

The transducer itself usually cannot, but the indicator or amplifier often can. If you send in the measuring chain, we can adjust the sensitivity after consulting you. The certificate then shows the results before and after adjustment.

How many load steps are needed?

For a check, 3 steps are often sufficient, for example 20, 60 and 100 per cent of the range. For an extensive calibration or an ISO 376 calibration we measure 8 or more steps, so that the behaviour across the full range becomes visible.

My transducer has been overloaded. What now?

Have it recalibrated before using it again. An overload can cause a permanent zero shift or a change in sensitivity that is not visible from the outside.

What if my transducer does not fit in your benches?

Send us the type number or a drawing in advance. We can often solve it with an adapter or loading pad. If it really does not fit, you will hear from us before you send anything.
