Load shackles and load pins

Load shackle or load pin calibration

A load shackle or load pin measures the force at the point where the load hangs: in the shackle or in the pin of a block, sheave or hinge. We calibrate them in tension up to 500 kN, together with the wireless or cabled readout you use in the field.

Applications

Load shackles and load pins are found in lifting and hoisting, on offshore installations, in mooring systems and in winches and cranes. They monitor whether a load stays within the working load limit, record forces during a lifting operation or control an overload protection system. Because safety decisions often depend on them, clients and inspection bodies require a valid calibration certificate.

Why mounting is so important

A load shackle measures correctly when the force is introduced in the same way as in use: through the bow and the pin, in the longitudinal direction. A load pin is even more sensitive to mounting, because the pin measures the force through shear between the bearing points. We therefore calibrate with suitable fixtures, such as pins, eyes or clevises that match the dimensions of your instrument.

  • Load shackles: we mount the shackle between tension fixtures with the correct pin diameter, so that the force runs cleanly through the bow.
  • Load pins: we use a set-up that reproduces the bearing spacing and the direction of the force in your application as closely as possible. Please send the drawing or the type number along.

If a load pin does not fit in our standard set-up, we discuss in advance whether an adapter is needed.

Wireless readout and telemetry

Many load shackles work with a wireless handheld or a receiver in the crane cab. Send it along, including any antennas and chargers. We then calibrate the measurement as the operator sees it. Check beforehand that the batteries are full; a flat battery can disturb the reading and delay the calibration.

Working load limit, measuring range and breaking load

With load shackles, three terms are easily confused:

  • Working load limit (WLL) is the maximum load for which the shackle is approved as a lifting accessory.
  • Measuring range is the force over which the manufacturer specifies the accuracy of the measurement. Often this is equal to the working load limit.
  • Breaking load is many times higher and is not relevant to the calibration.

We calibrate across the measuring range, up to a maximum of 500 kN. A shackle is therefore never loaded above its working load limit during calibration. In the quote basket, select the range that matches the working load limit or measuring range of your shackle.

What should you send along?

  • the load shackle or load pin, with the matching bolt, nut and retaining pin;
  • the indicator, handheld or receiver, with antennas, cables and full batteries;
  • the type number, the serial number and, for a load pin, the drawing showing bearing spacing and load direction;
  • the previous certificate, so that you can follow the drift of the measurement over the years.

If there is a marking on the pin indicating the measuring direction, leave it intact. We load the pin in the same direction as in your application.

Frequently asked questions

Up to what working load limit can you calibrate a load shackle?

We calibrate in tension up to 500 kN, approximately 51 t. If your shackle has a higher working load limit, please contact us to discuss which part of the range we can cover.

Is a calibration the same as an inspection of the shackle?

No. We calibrate the force measurement. The inspection of the shackle or pin as a lifting accessory, for example for cracks and deformation, is a separate inspection. We do, however, report visible damage before we start measuring.

How often should a load shackle be calibrated?

Annually is customary, and immediately after an overload or shock load. Your client or inspection body may require a shorter interval.

Can you calibrate several shackles from a lifting set at the same time?

Yes. Add them as separate lines in the quote basket or state the quantity. We calibrate each shackle with its own readout, so that each one receives its own certificate.
